How the IFICI deadline works

  1. The day you become tax resident starts the clock

The date you become tax resident sets the deadline to register for IFICI, so the order of your move matters as much as the regime you pick.

  2. Register by 15 January of the following year

Requests are filed on the Portal das Finanças by 15 January of the year after the one in which you become resident.

  3. The 20% rate then runs for ten consecutive years

The special 20% rate applies for ten consecutive years from the year of your registration as a resident.

What a late registration costs

If you register after the deadline, the 20% rate applies from the year you register, for the remaining years only. You do not lose the regime, you lose the missed years at 20%.

Frequently asked questions

IFICI is a tax regime, not an immigration permit, and the two are separate processes. If you're not an EU citizen you'll need legal residency in Portugal to benefit from it. The date you become tax resident also sets your IFICI deadline, so we look at your timing on the call.

You must not have been a Portuguese tax resident in the last 5 years, hold at least a level 5 qualification under the European Qualifications Framework (except on the investment route), and engage in a qualifying professional activity in Portugal in one of the eligible sectors.

No. The original NHR scheme closed to new applicants. IFICI is the current regime. People call it NHR 2.0 because the structure is very similar, but IFICI has different eligibility requirements and broader foreign income exemptions.
